Delicious Pile of Books

I'd guess we all have bedside tables. I'd bet each is piled with books.

Wanna peek at mine?

The stack to the right is of those I've started reading. They are The Help by Kathryn Stockett (love it, flawless, will finish it first so it can return to the library), dwelling places by Vinita Hampton Wright (beautiful voice, excited to try her other titles), and Breaking Dawn by Stephenie Meyer (want to finish the series, you know... and oh yes, Team Jacob).

Those on the left were purchased over the weekend. Brand new, under $2 a piece. (I made my husband drag me from the store, because I needed more books like a need a cracked tailbone.) I got Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt (RIP), Painted Dresses by Patricia Hickman, A Summer Affair by Elin Hilderbrand, and The Bondwoman's Narrative by Hannah Crafts. Each of their spines drew me in, as did their premises (save McCourt's, and his was the familiar name that did it).

Seriously, is there anything more appealing than a towering stack of books? (Well yes, but a towering stack of fudgy brownies has its own delicious benefits.)

Tell me, have you read any from my table? And what's yours look like?

Delicious, indeed.

And, hey - cool brown over here. Earthy, warm, inviting....I like it.

Read "Painted Dresses" and enjoyed. Read McCourt's first book and was blown away. (Sorry I can't remember title right now...too early in AM!).

I get withdrawal symptoms if I'm down to one book on my shelf and have to head out to the bookstore for a fix. Can't relax until I have a stack waiting to be read!

I've got a pile on my coffee table but packed two in my backpack. Headed to Seattle on Weds and so for 6 delicious hours, I get to read!

I have a teetering stack thanks to a library book sale. Who can resist a $1 book? I even like that musky smell and those yellowed pages.

So excited for your books!

I think I'm the only reader I know who doesn't keep a stack of books on my nightstand. I like to look at them on the bookshelves.

The only books I've read on your list are also the only ones I've heard of (besides The Help, thanks to yesterday's conversation):

Angela's Ashes
Breaking Dawn

Loved them both.

Thanks, Tess! Glad you like it.

Donna - I'm very excited about Painted Dresses. The first few sentences drew me in.

Terri - That means you get to see your little guy! Have fun, and be safe. (And enjoy those books.)

Becca - Not me! I love checking that $1 sale table at the library.

Melanie - I've got the shelves, too. ;) I have mixed feelings about Breaking Dawn. But I can't not read it. Right?

I've heard The Help is fantastic and I loved Angela's Ashes!

I'm reading three books right now for reviews and a few others to improve writing, grow spiritually...etc.

New (or used) books = sheer giddy excitement for me.

My problem is I keep buying books, but don't have the time to read them. LOL Oh, well. I will some day.

Let's see...

I've read Angela's Ashes, The Help, A Summer Affair, and all of the Twilight series. I'm not reading anything right now, gotta return overdue books to the library and get some more.

Yumm-a-licious books! I love stacks, piles, and shelves filled with books! Like you - I need no more, but I want plenty! I've read most of what's in your current reading pile (finished the Twilight series in 11 days because I just couldn't put it down). I've read a lot of what's in your "new" pile, but there are many titles I haven't heard of. Right now, my night table is empty aside from the lamp and alarm clock. *gasps* That hasn't happened in months. What's wrong with me?! I know . . . I need to shop for some more. Or . . . is it that I want to? ::winks:: I'd say BOTH!

I love the smell of age new book. I feel unfinished if I am not reading something. My "bookshelf" is the ledge of the window in my bedroom. I am fast running out of room so sometimes I have to take a book and pack it away to make room for a new one. It is not always an easy decision to decide who stays and who goes.

Janna Leadbetter said...

Wendy - I usually don't read more than one at a time, but sometimes more than one draws us in!

Lynnette - You'll find the time!

VirtualWordsmith - Getcha somethin' good. :)

Jenn - You know, I've begun to think we're justified, because of our line of work. You know?

Analisa - I so know what you mean. I recently thought maybe I should pare down, donate or something. But deciding what to get rid of is like choosing to cut half my head of hair!

I read Angela's Ashes. It is a good one. You will cry, though.

Great stack of books! Mine is much more discrete thanks to my Kindle. now dear hubby can't complain about all the new books, he can't see them ;)

Jody Hedlund said...

I don't have a stack on my bedside table, only because I don't have a table. :) But I do have a stack on the floor next to my bed! And yes, there's nothing more delicious than looking at that stack!

Diane said...

Love your variety and it sounds like a cheap addiction at $2 each! :O)

Katie Salidas said...

I recently posted a picture of my stack. LoL. Guess we all have one.

Mine has an ARC from a friend and "The Time Travelers Wife" at the moment. I loved it by the way.

Lori said...

No, nothing more beautiful.Maybe I'll post mine soon.

JLC said...

That stack looks great!

I've read Meyer's book and I WANT to read 'The Help'. I just finished The 'Cellist of Sarajevo' and I have started on 'Harry Potter' (yet again) for my 'banned' book this week. :)

Cindy R. Wilson said...

I've heard good things about several of those books. I love, love, love books. My shelves are stacked with some I haven't read yet and now that things aren't so busy I am looking forward to reading some.

Melanie Hooyenga said...

Janna, I agree -- you must read it! Then we can discuss.

WendyCinNYC said...

I'm glad you are enjoying The Help. My TBRs are on my bookshelf and I'm currently reading Sima's Undergarments for Women.

Jill Kemerer said...

My stack frightens and excites me--much like a stack of brownies would! Your list makes me smile, because it just seems so...you! Glad you had fun picking out more books!

Deb Shucka said...

I have very similar (but larger) piles by my bed, and several others behind me in my office. They make me really happy. I've read The Help and loved it a lot.

Nadine said...

I love buying new books! There is something so promising about the clean cover and unbroken spine, ready to take me to another world. Sigh... I think it's been too long since I've been in a book store. I may need to go today...

Angie Muresan said...

Jana, your side table looks like mine! I live within a few blocks of a huge bookstore (Powell's Books, Portland Oregon) where they stack new copies of books next to slightly used ones, at more than half price off. Needless to say, but I spend every free waking minute there.

Melissa Amateis said...

Oh goodness. I have stacks of books everywhere. Always have. Sometimes the same books will sit for weeks without me looking at them before I'll pick on up again.

I usually have my current pile stacked on my living room end table. I just cleared it off to make room for some new ones. :-)

I once argued with someone over the transition away from real books to digital books. I can't imagine a world without real words printed on crisp paper pages between two covers worn and burnished on the edges. Indulge your passions!

Mine isn't so bad anymore, basically since I have a hard time finding time to read...so my shelf has only my favorites on it, but then my nightstand tends to grow a few. I'll have to take a picture of my daughter's room and maybe I'll post that on my blog tomorrow. It's REALLY scary and a true need for a Kindle. She needs a 12 step program when it comes to books!

Jessica Nelson said...

I started Angela's ashes but it was so sad I couldn't continue. I do have a huge pile by my bed though, and delicious is the perfect word! :-)
I think Hickman is such a beautiful writer.

Angela's Ashes... have a box of tissues nearby... brilliant read but very harrowing. Love hearing what other people love reading. xx

Janna Leadbetter said...

Lazy Writer - Shoot. I'll have to prepare myself. But you know, I love books that move me to tears.

T. Anne - Cool! You make a very good argument. I shall remember that. ;)

Jody - You must remedy that! No lamp or anything?

Diane - Exactly! Much less guilt this way. :)

quixotic - I saw that! It was a purdy stack.

Oh, Jenn. I read that one about a month ago (and then saw the movie two weekends ago). It's a must read, don't you think?

Lori - I'd love to see it!

Janna Leadbetter said...

JLC - Hm, I've not heard of the Cellist title. But go Potter!

Cindy - You know, I should admit I'm the same way. Books I've bought before sit, unread. But each book has its season (or mood), I think.

Mel - I know the general gist, but my friend led me to believe there's something really big I still don't know...

Wendy - Yours was the first recommendation I saw for The Help. I'll be recommending it, too!

Jill - Maybe we should work on a stack of books next to a stack of brownies?

Deb - Everywhere you turn, huh? I understand. I myself am in need of another bookshelf.

Nadine - Did you go?

Angie - Oh gosh, I'd be in trouble near a bookstore like that!

Melissa - Yes! Make 'em good. ;)

LeSan - I so agree! That's not to say I won't one day get an e-reader, but I'll never give up my paper books.

Janna Leadbetter said...

Sharla - Yipes! But what a great thing for your daughter to be interested in!

Jessica - Hers is one I'm most eager for! Such a neat premise. And the first few sentences really sucked me in.

Ladybird - Thanks for the heads up!

Unfortunately my stack hasn't changed much lately, other than it just keeps growing! I'm trying to read a book about dog behavior right now, for the heck of it, as well as short stories from Eudora Welty, but neither are going swimmingly.

Deb said...

Beautiful! I love those stacks of books. I haven't read any of those--yet :) I currently have six books in the bedroom stack and one notebook--just in case the muse pays a late night visit.

Janna Leadbetter said...

scarlethue - Sounds like a trip to the library or bookstore is in order! :)

Strange Fiction - Yes! Have to have a notebook. ;)

Currently reading Dan Brown's newest, THE LOST SYMBOL. And I'm glad to hear you're on Team Jacob...me too!

Diane Marie Shaw said...

My nightstand is too small so my stack is on the floor by my bed. Then there is the stack on my coffee table (really it's a book table) and the basket in my dining room that contains the stack of library books and shelves and shelves full. I love books. Went to two used bookstores this weekend and came home with eight more books. :)

I love stacks of books! I haven't read any of yours, but now you've given me so ideas:)

Kathy said...

Great post, Janna.

I must admit my most recently purchased books are not as organized as yours. Mine are strewn all over the house.

Some are in my office, some are in the living room, maybe one or two in my bedroom. I haven't been reading much since the new TV shows started airing. But you have inspired me to get back to reading!

Janna Leadbetter said...

Kara - I hope you do!

Kathy - All the premieres can be a distraction, huh? There's one or two that have waylaid my reading, too. ;)

Rosaria Williams said...

Love that feeling, books in hand, pocketbook still full. The only one I read from your stash is Angela's Ashes. I also read his other book, Teacher Man.

I'm now reading The Enchantress of Florence, an excellent adventure set in the 15th century, half in Asia, half in Europe and the New World.

Spy Scribbler said...

I've read Breaking Dawn (fabulous!) and Angela's Ashes (also incredible!). My stack is huge. I keep meaning to post a list on my blog, but I keep forgetting.

Enjoy them, Janna!

Janna Leadbetter said...

lakeviewer - I've been hearing such great things about McCourt's writing.

Natasha - Hop to! I'd be curious about your pile. :)

Nice to visit your blog again. Melanie is not alone. I keep NO books by my bed. I have a tower (literally) of books to be read and it is in my study. I keep the books I'm reading (3 at the moment: 1 novel, 1 nonfiction, 1 poetry) by my chair in the den. Then carry my novel to my bed at night and back downstairs in the morning.

By the way, re kindle, I am enjoying it for travel, but not otherwise.

Janna Leadbetter said...

Cynthia - Great to see you! I've picked up a regular book again since this post, and I'm feeling glad to have both as options. And we'll be traveling this weekend, so I'll get to try my Kindle through travel for the first time!
