"This might surprise you," he says (on the small card that accompanied him), "but I write stories with my tail. It just takes a bit of ink and some imagination, really."
He sits by my desk, and I see him everyday. He smiles at me, with encouragement, and has the warmest eyes. I'm not convinced the name Huxley fits him, though. I'd like Shane or Phillip or Bim or something like that, I think. Refined but not pretentious.
Want to help me decide what it should be?

The name that popped in my head was Timothy. He would never be called Timmy or Tim, always Timothy. He would need his spectacles only for reading and the pipe would be filled with a cherry-flavored tobacco. He should also have a pocket watch with a chain so he can let you know when you've worked too long.

Seymour was the first thing that came to mind. I tend to come up with names in a flash and stick with them, so I declare him Seymour. :)

His name is Aloysius Penman of course, and he's been waiting for you to discover that for ever so long. He curses the misfortune that led to the wrong tag being applied to his exterior. People who don't know better might shorten his name and call him Al, but Aloysius considers the nickname undignified. He much prefers the sophisticated flow of the full moniker and imagines how lovely his name will look on the cover of a book.

ReplyDeleteIf he were mine, I'd christen him as Maxwell, but he'd be known to his near and dearest friends as Max. And I'm pretty sure he'd have a wonderful British accent. (Of course, my kids would refuse to call him anything but Stuart because we've been reading Stuart Little and they're kind of obsessed with it. He would have an identity crisis in my house, so I'm glad he's safe on your desk. :) ) Happy writing!
ReplyDeleteHello Janna. I think he looks like a Walter. Such a stern but loving name. Or maybe a Wallace (that was my grandfather's first name). But not a Wally. He looks much too proper for nicknames.
ReplyDeleteI have a pink piggy on my desk. Her name is Petunia. And recently I added a pink teddy bear that was my mother's. I haven't given her a name yet...maybe an upcoming contest on Author Savannah Rose site...hmmmm.
Please name him Clive, as that is what the C. in C.S. Lewis stands for. It's dignified, yet snappy; sweet, yet profound. It fits that little furry man with the inky tail, don't you think?
