There are times I feel powerful. Like when I lift and carry forty pounds of sleeping daughter up our long flight of stairs. When I drive with aggressive confidence through six lanes of rush-hour traffic. Or when I've opportunity to say the right thing, offer a warm hug, lift a soul up.
But mostly, it's when I write.
It might start out a small feeling, just a hint needing cultivation, as the first threads of creativity take hold. And then, as my idea forms, the words gather and a sense of efficacy latches on, wanting more. It builds. And later, after I've written, once I've shared and people have read, absorbed, related, when they've told me they connected, laughed, enjoyed...
There it is: POWER.
When do you feel powerful?

I love the way you wrote this. I've never quite thought of myself as feeling powerful but some of your examples made me think. I feel powerful when I go through a day and am thankful without complaining:))
I feel powerful too if I can write anything that makes a difference to someone. A good power and a huge blessing!
Beautiful! I too feel powerful when I write. I also feel powerful when I meet my goals.
Loved this post! I feel powerful whenever I accomplish something - baking a cake, making a good dinner, writing several chapters, etc. It's a wonderful feeling!
Definitely when I write. And when a shared experience helps someone heal. And talking about books. And standing outside in the wind.
Your blog along with mine and many others isn't showing up with a new post today. Hmm...I wonder what is going on.
Anyhow, I definitely feel powerful when I write, but also feel powerful if I can manage to keep my kids from fighting all day. :)
Terri - Thank you. And I'm so glad you came up with things that make you feel powerful!
Jill - Good one (about goals). And thanks. :)
Nadine - Absolutely! I guess it's most often accompanied by accomplishment.
Deb, "standing outside in the wind," I love that.
Lazy Writer - Well! That explains all the quiet this morning! I just thought no one liked my post. :) Thanks for the heads up.
I know what you mean! I also feel very weak when doing bills, making phone calls, etc... LOL!
I feel powerful when I ask the questions that lead my children to their own discoveries. :)
Oh yes oh yes oh yes!! That is exactly it. Thank you for illuminating such a thing.
Hadn't realised it at all. Now, dont you feel powerful knowing what you've done??! And I feel powerful knowing something new. Thanks!!xx
I've been unplugged lately, perhaps I really ought to do more 'power' activities. :)
Isn't it incredible how the written word can change a life!! One simple word like "love" or "hate" can bring devastation or joy! Choose your words carefully is a message I have ingrained in my brain!
Me again... nominated this post for post of the day, because loved it so much. xx
I feel most powerful when I haul the big water jugs into the swively holder. *flexes*
Mentally I love it when I'm explaining something about which I'm passionate and the worlds flow out of me exactly the way I want them too.
I definitely feel power when someone tells me my words have touched them. A girl contacted me recently to say she's been reading me since she was 14...she's now 17. She said my words have affected her through all the years she's read them. I was absolutely awed by that.
Wonderfully written post today. I also feel powerful when my poetry reaches each reader individually and personally.
Hmmmm. I'm not sure I feel power, really. Except when I kiss hubby. Snort!
Good question. I'll have to think about this because I don't really feel powerless either...
This is a very intriguing post, my friend. I guess I do fee a sense of power when I have written something that I feel good about. And when someone compliments a piece, definitely a powerful feeling. Thanks for giving me something to think about.
Good post! I feel power, now that you explained it that way, when the right word or phrase comes in writing. Or hey, when my dog obeys me.:)
Thanks for that thought
Natasha - Yes, I'd rather not get into those instances when I feel weak. ;)
Wordsmith - I like conversations like that, too.
Ladybird - You are somethin' else. :) Thanks for the nomination! (Does that come with a brownie?)
JLC - I think you're plenty powerful, in your own right, plugged in or not.
Donna - That's a good internal message!
Melanie - YES! You described it so well; the explaining something well. For me, it's when I can do it confidently, without tensing up and floundering words and flubbing my thoughts.
Stephanie - That's incredible! Congrats!
septembermom - Thanks. Poetry can do that, can't it?
Jessica - ROFL!!
Linda - I hope you think of lots of things that make you feel powerful. They've got to be there. :)
Karen - Maybe you could help my dog? ;)
If there is any desirable power for me, that is the one.
When my whole house is clean, and straight and ready for whatever is going on.
I RARELY feel that powerful!
when i walk
when i write
when i get it
when i give it
when my children are happy
when i am the cause
when my love bends to my eye
Lori - I hear ya!
Capri K - Yes'm, I agree. :)
Woman - Stop that with your beautiful words! You'll be taking over my blog's readers. ;)
When I write. And when I mother and love and help others.
Terresa - Yes! I understand.
